Class Galaxy (Years 2 and 3)

Welcome to Class Galaxy!

 

The focus of our class names this year is astronomy. We have chosen different celestial bodies.

Our class is Class Galaxy, we are year 2 and year 3!

Homework

Homework consists of both spelling and maths. Spelling homework is set in line with the phonics/spelling level that the child is currently working on. Maths homework is based around times tables - focusing on 2, 5 and 15 for year 2 children, and 3, 4 and 8 for year 3 children. Both are set on a Tuesday and are due the following Monday. 

 

Curriculum Coverage

 

Maths - In maths, children will be focusing on:

- Division and multiplication

- Position and direction (y2)

- Length, height, shape and perimeter

English - Our English topics in Spring 1 include Traditional Tales where we will be looking at a twisted version of Rapunzel, play scripts where we will be looking at The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. In Spring 2, we will be focusing on instructions where we will be looking at how to plant a flower and then Diamante poetry.

Science - Our first topic in science this term is Plants - light and dark - we will be exploring how light effects how plants grow. Our second topic is Living things in their habitats. We will be looking at a variety of animals and will be exploring where they live and why. 

History - Our History topic is History of the local area. We will be taking a closer look into the history of Gaddesden Row, and identifying what has changed over time. We will be comparing now and then, looking at how things have changed and exploring how we know about Gaddesdens history. 

Geography - In Spring 2, we will be  investigating what coasts are, how they are formed, how they are protected and why they are constantly changing. We will look into the processes of erosion and deposition and how they affect the coast. 

Design and Technology - Our unit of work is called Light-up signs. We will be exploring electrical circuits and designing and making decorative light boxes with illuminated words or letters. 

Art - In art, we will be exploring famous buildings. We will be looking at some of the well-known architecture around the world such as the Taj Mahal and St Pauls Cathedral. We will be using a range of sketching techniques to recreate them. 

RE - In Spring 1, the children will be looking at What do we know about Jesus? where they will work on understanding how Jesus is represented and explore peoples views. In Spring 2, the children will explore Jewish celebrations. They will learn about Jewish beliefs and festivals including Passover, Sukkot and Hannukkah. 

PSHE -  Our first unit this term is Keeping Safe where children will learn about medicine safety, managing risk and staying safe online. The second half terms focus is Rights and Respect where children will explore themes of money management, cooperation, self-regulation and online safety. 

PE - Our Spring 1 unit of work is gymnastics where the children will learn make shapes with their bodies and create routines both independently and in groups. Our Spring 2 unit of work is Outdoor and Adventurous activities - the children will engage with a range of outdoor activities. The children will also be going swimming this term (Thursdays - PE KIT!). 

Music - Our unit of work for this term is Sounds Great. We will explore how sounds are made using different types of instruments, including the human voice.
