Homework

Homework consists of both spelling and maths. Spelling homework is set in line with the phonics/spelling level that the child is currently working on. Maths homework is based around times tables - focusing on 2, 5 and 20 for year 2 children, and 3, 4 and 8 for year 3 children. Both are set on a Tuesday and are due the following Monday.

Curriculum Coverage

Maths - In maths we will be starting with our Place Value and Number unit of work. In year 2 we will be looking at the place value of 2-digit numbers and in year 3 we will be looking at 3-digit numbers. Some examples of what we will be focusing on include number lines, counting in 2s, 5s and 20s and partitioning. Then we will begin our Addition and Subtraction unit where we will focus on using different methods to add and subtract 2 and 3-digit numbers, depending on the year group.

English - Our English topics include adventure stories with 'Once Upon a Dragon's Fire', persuasive writing based on making London in 2666 safe, Historical writing based on Bonfire night, a recount based on The Great Fire of London and acrostic poems based on Christmas.

Science - Our first unit is looking at animals' needs for survival. In this unit we will be exploring mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and humans. Then we will move on to exploring different materials, including looking at properties of materials, testing them and investigating which ones are waterproof.

History - Our History topic is 'The Great Fire of London'. Children will find out when, where, how and why the Great Fire Happened, the effect it had on the people of the time and explore how we know about it through the diary of Samuel Pepys and other sources. We will be looking at the differences between London in 2666 and London today.

Geography - In Autumn 2, we will be learning about the location of countries around the world, as well as their human and physical geographical features, from time zones and climate to population and culture.

Design and Technology - Our unit of work is called Perfect Pizzas! We will be discovering what a variety of toppings look like, taste like and feel like. The children will then have the challenge of designing and making their pizza to meet a design brief and evaluate it based on the criteria.

Art - In Art, we will be exploring Seurat and Pointilism. Children will find out about Seurat and explore his artwork, before creating their very own Pointilism art.

RE - In Autumn 2, the children will be looking at different religious signs and symbols and how they are used to express ideas about God, beliefs and traditions. In Autumn 2, the children will be leaning all about Diwali - the HIndy festival of light.

PSHE -  Our first unit is 'Me and My Relationships' where we look at being a good friend, kindness and rules. Our Autumn 2 unit is 'Valuing Difference' where we will be looking at what makes us special, who our special people are and acts of kindness.

PE - Our Autumn 2 unit of work is gymnastics, with a focus on shape. The children will make shapes with their bodies and create routines. In Autumn 2, the unit of work is dance, based on The Gunpowder Plot. The children will use dance to retell the story and dance to different rhythms and tempos and use their bodies to produce rhythm.

Music - We will be kicking of the year exploring singing and listening through songs linked to the Great Fire of London. A chance for the children to sing in a round and to play percussion instruments to the music.
